BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team will begin play in its highly-anticipated 2013 Southern Conference schedule Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs welcome the Georgia Southern Eagles to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for a key early-season league matchup.
The game will also mark the Bulldogs' third-annual "Kickin' It For Kids With Cancer" match. Samford is slated to wear special green jerseys throughout the contest and the actual game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off in a "silent auction" during the match. The starting bid for each jersey is $50 and all proceeds will be donated to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.
Additionally, the Samford Athletic Department has been selling "Kickin' It For Kids" t-shirts for a $5 donation the week leading up to the match. The t-shirts will also be sold at the Samford Track and Stadium on Friday.
Fans are encouraged to wear their t-shirts to the game in support of children and families affected by pediatric cancer. For more information on how to donate, please visit

Samford (6-2) heads into Friday's contest with a full head of steam and is in the midst of a four-match winning streak. The Bulldogs own a perfect 4-0 record at home this season and have earned victories against Tennessee, Auburn, Vanderbilt and Georgia State.
On Tuesday, Samford received votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) weekly top-25 poll for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs were also tabbed as the eighth-ranked team in the talent-laden Southeast Regional listings.
Georgia Southern (1-5-1) is coming off a 3-2 loss at Mercer on Sunday and is looking for its first road win of the season. The Eagles currently own an 0-4 record on the road in 2013.
Georgia Southern freshman Jennifer Wittick is leading the Eagles with three goals on the season, while Sydnie Van Curen, Abria Allen and Cori Dulmage have tallied one goal apiece.
The Bulldogs own an undefeated 8-0-1 all-time record against Georgia Southern and have outscored the Eagles by a total of 16-2.
Samford holds an eight-match winning streak versus Georgia State dating all the way back to Sept. 15, 1997, when the teams battled to a 0-0 draw. In the nine all-time meetings between the teams, Samford has tallied seven shutouts.
Last season, the teams squared off in Statesboro, Ga., and the Bulldogs opened their 2012 SoCon schedule on a high note as they posted a 2-1 road victory against Georgia Southern in a physical, hard-fought contest held at Eagle Field.
Samford's goals last season were scored by
Lindsey Hansen and
Michelle Moll. Moll's key goal, which was tallied in the 69
th minute of play, proved to be the game-winner as she rifled home a shot from the middle of the field near the penalty spot. Moll's key score was her first of the 2012 campaign and was assisted by
Trine Taule.
Following Friday's SoCon-opening contest, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs continue their four-match homestand with a momentous contest against the Davidson Wildcats to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
