BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford true freshman
Malcanisha Kelley has scored the Bulldogs' game-winning goals against both Tennessee and Auburn this season. Last week, Kelley's key second-half score versus Auburn earned the dynamic 5-foot-10 forward a spot on the CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll, as presented by College Soccer 360.com.
Kelley scored the game-winning goal in the Bulldogs' 1-0 victory against Auburn on Friday. Her decisive score occurred in the 52nd minute of play and propelled Samford to its second straight win over a Southeastern Conference opponent.
On Aug. 25, Kelley also scored the game-winning goal in the Bulldogs' 1-0 triumph over Tennessee.
Kelley, who was one of the highest-recruited players in the state of Alabama, chose to attend Samford over Auburn and was thrust into her current goal-scoring role with an early-season injury to junior forward
Brittany Hoffman. Kelley has since thrived in her attacking role and is currently leading Samford in goals (2), points (4) and shot attempts (10) this season.
After defeating both Tennessee and Auburn, Samford's string of back-to-back victories over SEC opponents is a school record. With the Bulldogs' shutout win against Auburn, Samford defeated the Tigers for the first time in eight chances. In 2009, the teams played to a dramatic 0-0 season-opening draw held at Bulldog Field.
Samford snapped a three-match losing streak against Auburn and knocked off its fifth SEC opponent in school history. The Bulldogs' list of conquests also includes Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Although Samford has never defeated Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs advanced past the Commodores via penalty kicks in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
Joining Samford's Kelley on the CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll were Madeline Barker of Georgia, Dagny Brynjarsdottir of Florida State, Nicole Caruso of Michigan State, Erin Dees of Portland, Shasta Fisher of Virginia, Gabby Kaufman of Arizona, Sarah Killion of UCLA, Eileen Maes of Long Beach State, Cheyenne Spade of Tennessee and Pepperdine's Lynn Williams, who garnered the national Player of the Week honor.
