Samford Closes Out Weekend With JSU Sweep

Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. ---- Samford Volleyball closed out its weekend at the Lipscomb Invitational with another sweep over an in-state foe, as the Bulldogs defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in three sets Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.

Samford (5-3) set a fast pace on offense, hitting .296 to Jacksonville State's (2-5) .133 clip, outscoring them 58-39.5.  Michaela Reesor led all players with 13 kills, nearly scoring a double-double with seven digs as well.  Freshman Gabbi Greenwald, making her first collegiate start, was second on the team with eight kills and a .385 attack percentage.  The defense did their part as well, digging twice as many balls as Jacksonville State, 54-27, led by Chelsi Carter with 18 and Taylor Chao with 10.

The Samford offense spread things out early in set one, as five different Bulldogs scored a kill en route to a strong 10-4 lead.  Samford kept rolling to a 17-9 lead before Jacksonville State began to fight back, scoring four unanswered to make it 17-13 as the Bulldogs took a timeout.  Samford answered with a 4-1 run to take a 21-14 lead as the Gamecocks took a timeout.  Samford hit set point, leading 24-15, and Jacksonville State scored two but a kill by Greenwald sealed the 25-17 win.

Set two was very tightly contested, with neither team able to build more than a two-point lead early.  The teams traded points back-and-forth with Jacksonville State finally taking a timeout after a hard kill up the middle by Reesor made it a 16-15 game.  Tied at 20-20, Samford outscored Jacksonville State 5-2 as a kill by Greenwald gave the Bulldogs set point, 24-22, and a block by Greenwald and Emily Meitz sealed the 25-22 win.

With Stephanie Palmer at the service line to start set three, Samford climbed to an early 4-0 lead including two service aces as the Gamecocks took a frustrated early timeout.  The Bulldogs continued to roll out of the break, building a 12-4 lead after Erin Bognar found the back corner on a kill from the outside, forcing another Jacksonville State timeout.  Samford eventually built a double-digit lead, up 14-4, and kept rolling to the 20-point mark, up 20-7.  With Samford up 21-8, the Gamecocks scored five unanswered points to draw back within single digits, 21-13, as the Bulldogs took a timeout.  Jacksonville State would only score one point in the remainder of the match, as Samford went on to win 25-14 and secure its fifth sweep of the season.

Next weekend, Samford heads to Kennesaw, Ga., for the KSU Owls Invite, hosted by Kennesaw State.  On Friday, Sept. 13, Samford will play Coastal Carolina (10 a.m. ET) and Stony Brook (2:30 p.m. ET) and on Saturday, Sept. 14, the Bulldogs face Tennessee Tech (2:30 p.m. ET) and Kennesaw State (7:30 p.m. ET).
