Live StatsSPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Samford University soccer team will conclude play in its four-match, 11-day Southern Conference road stretch Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against the resurgent Wofford Terriers in a key league contest to be held at Snyder Field (2,250).
Samford (9-7, 4-2 SoCon) heads into Sunday's matchup with aspirations of bouncing back from a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Furman on Friday in a late-season league contest held at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
The defending conference champion Paladins scored the game-winning goal at exactly 80:02 to register the winning tally. Furman's Carlie Couch connected on the shot from 22 yards out after running under a forwarding pass from Jamie Alexander.
Couch's goal proved to be just enough in the contest as Samford's late scoring chances ended up barely missing the mark.
Friday's defeat snapped Samford's four-match road winning streak.
Since suffering a 2-0 road setback at Lipscomb on Sept. 14, the Bulldogs rattled off consecutive road victories against Austin Peay, 3-1, Chattanooga, 3-0, VMI, 5-0, and UNCG, 1-0. Despite its loss to Furman, Samford still owns a solid 7-3 record on the road this season.
Wofford (5-8, 2-4 SoCon) enters Sunday's showdown with a full head of steam after posting a record-setting 10-0 victory over Chattanooga on Friday.
The Terriers' win set a single-match record for goals (10) and points (30) in the program's 21-season history. The highest goal total in a single game was previously nine, set in a 9-0 victory on Sept. 22, 2002, against The Citadel.
Wofford was dominant throughout against the Mocs, keeping the ball in the attacking third for the majority of the match. The Terriers amassed 35 shots with 17 on goal. Wofford also created eight attempts from the corner.
Hannah Washko highlighted Friday's match for the Terriers, finishing with five points on two goals and an assist. Washko scored twice in a six minute span, striking first in the 34th minute. The freshman received a pass in the box from Vicki Hill, heading the ball in the back of the net. Six minutes later, the midfielder volleyed the ball home via a corner-kick-service from freshman defender Rachel Fenner.
The Bulldogs have never been defeated by Wofford and own a 5-0-3 advantage in the all-time series between the teams. Samford is in the midst of a four-match winning streak against the Terriers in which the Bulldogs have outscored Wofford by a total of 9-2.
Last season, Samford earned a 2-1 home victory against the Terriers.
Following Sunday's crucial road test at Wofford, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs play host to The Citadel Bulldogs in a Senior Night contest to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
Prior to the match, Samford will honor its talented senior class comprised of
Amanda Abbott,
Katie Danehy,
Brittany Hoffman,
Ariane Lukens and
Melissa Montgomery.
