"Due to the inclement weather overnight Friday and the forecast through Sunday morning the final round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate has been canceled," said Odom. "Unfortunately, the temperature will fall to 24 degrees at 6 a.m., Sunday, and then only rise to high 30s by noon. Some parts of the course will not receive enough sunshine to melt remaining snow or thaw enough to play.
"Not until then could the grounds staff blow off greens and cut new cups. Best-case scenario would be a shotgun start around 12:30 p.m., which would push the completion of the round very close to sunset. Upon the advice of the golf course staff and the weather report, canceling play is the smartest option."
The final two rounds of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate were slated to be played Sunday. The opening round of action was moved from Saturday to Friday due to the impending inclement weather.
Samford men's golfer
Chris Clouser turned in his best round of the 2014 fall season Friday as the Bulldogs' native of Huntsville, Ala., carded a brilliant 2-under-par 69 on the opening day of play at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina University at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Clouser's team-best performance moved him into a six-way tie for third place in the individual standings. The finished proved to be the best of his collegiate career. The field for the tournament consisted of 12 teams and 75 competitors.
As a team, Samford earned an eighth-place finish with a first-round tally of 298. Temperatures dropped 15 degrees throughout play Friday as both the winds and precipitation played a major role in the scoring. The Bulldogs battled through the wintry conditions and moved to within just seven strokes out of fourth place in the team standings.
Clemson ended up winning the tournament with a first-round tally of 278, while Furman finished second by a single stroke and Marshall rounded out the top three with an 18-hole mark of 284.
The field for the 2014 Hummingbird Intercollegiate also consisted of the following teams: Western Carolina, Brevard, Bucknell, Cardinal Stritch University, Colgate, Guilford, Wingate and Wofford.
Saturday's announcement marked the end of Samford's fall season. The Bulldogs will resume play in their 2014-15 campaign in the spring at the Savannah Quarters Invitational, which will be held Feb. 8-9 at the pristine Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Georgia.
