SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Samford placed 12 players on the All-Southern Conference teams for football, released by the league office Tuesday morning.
Wide receiver
Karel Hamilton and safety
Jaquiski Tartt were named first team by both the coaches and the media. Running back
Denzel Williams, linebacker
Justin Cooper and punter
Greg Peranich were named first team by the coaches and second team by the media. Offensive lineman
Gunnar Bromelow was named first team by the coaches, while fellow offensive lineman
Jordan Boatright was named first team by the media and second team by the coaches.
Safety
Jamerson Blount, defensive lineman
Michael Pierce and offensive lineman
Kyle Champion were named second team by both the coaches and the media. Defensive back
James Bradberry was named second team by the coaches, while place-kicker
Warren Handrahan was named to the media's second team.
Samford also placed two players on the league's all-freshman team. Wide receiver
Malik Johns and linebacker
Shaheed Salmon were Samford's representatives on the all-freshman squad.
Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media, while Huesman's teammate Davis Tull earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in both polls. VMI quarterback Al Cobb was named the SoCon's Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and the media, and Chattanooga's Russ Huesman was named the league's Coach of the Year. The coaches also awarded Chattanooga's Corey Levin the Jacobs Blocking Award.
Hamilton led Samford with 55 catches for 877 yards and six touchdowns. Hamilton led the SoCon in receiving yards per game (79.7 ypg.). Tartt, who earned All-SoCon honors for the third year in a row, was second on the team with 62 tackles, including 53 solo stops. Tartt also had one interception during the season.
Williams led the SoCon in scoring (8.7 ppg.), and he finished the season with 16 rushing touchdowns, one short of tying the school record. In his first season as a running back, Williams rushed for 918 yards on 191 carries. Cooper led Samford with 94 tackles, including 74 solo stops. Peranich led the SoCon in punting, averaging 42.9 yards per kick. Bromelow and Boatright led a strong offensive line for the Bulldogs this season.
Samford finished the 2014 season with a record of 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the SoCon, finishing tied for second in the league standings. The Bulldogs have now had four-straight winning seasons for the first time since 1999 and three-straight seven-win seasons for the first time since 1962.
