BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team will attempt to extend its home winning streak to six-consecutive matches Wednesday as the Bulldogs welcome in-state rival Jacksonville State to the Samford Tennis Center for an early-season, nonconference contest.
Samford (3-1) owns a brilliant 3-0 record when playing at home this season and ultimately boasts a five-match winning streak when playing at the Samford Tennis Center. The Bulldogs haven't been defeated at home since March 23, 2013, when they lost to Furman in Southern Conference play.
Last season, Samford completed dual-match play with a stellar 8-3 home record.
On Saturday, in their most recent outing, the Bulldogs cruised to a 6-1 nonconference victory against the UTSA Roadrunners in a dual-match contest held at the Samford Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs dominated doubles play against the Roadrunners and earned respective victories of 8-1 and 8-2, respectively, on courts No. 2 and No. 3.
In the No. 2 doubles matchup, Samford's combination of
Jessica Northcutt and
Stephanie N'tcha tallied an 8-1 victory, while the Bulldogs' tandem of
Yasmeen Ebada and
Emily Mallory notched an 8-2 triumph on court No. 3. Already this season, Samford has compiled an impressive 8-3 record in doubles play.
By winning the doubles point Saturday, the Bulldogs jumped out to a key 1-0 lead in the match.
Then, in singles play, Samford quickly received straight-set victories on each of the bottom five courts and garnered a decisive 6-0 lead. UTSA's lone win on the day occurred at singles court No. 1 where Jacobea Junger outlasted the Bulldogs'
Kristin Lewis, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Samford's lopsided singles triumphs were registered by No. 73-ranked N'tcha, Ebada, Northcutt, Mallory and
Lauren Caballero. The Bulldogs' Ebada, N'tcha and Mallory are all undefeated in singles play this season.
Jacksonville State (3-3) heads into Wednesday's contest with a full head of steam after earning a 7-0 sweep over Florida A&M on Sunday. The Gamecocks have been victorious in two of their last three matches and own a 2-2 road record this season.
Against Florida A&M, Jacksonville State started strong as the sweep was initiated with the win in doubles. The top pairing of
Raisa Guasti and
Olivia Nguyen edged FAMU's Elysia Ortiz and Symone Townsend, 9-8. Juniors
Zoe Bizinos and
Danielle Kerindi then clinched the doubles point for with an 8-4 win over Dominique Henry and Alexis Dean.
Even though Jacksonville State won all six singles matches, FAMU extended a trio of matches to three sets. At No. 2, Nguyen bounced back after dropping the first set to Townsend to win the next two – 6-3, 7-5.
Freshman
Claudia Marsala mirrored Nguyen by falling in the first set at No. 3 to Blackwood, but regrouped to win in straight sets – 6-2, 7-5. At No. 4, Bizinos needed all three sets to down her foe – Henry after splitting the first two sets. Bizinos won the third-and-deciding tiebreaker set, 10-5.
Guasti quickly disposed of Dean at No. 1 – 6-1, 6-0, while
Isidora Knezevic and
Sadey St. Amant recorded wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Last season, Samford and Jacksonville State squared off in Birmingham as the Bulldogs tallied a 4-1 victory held Feb. 13, 2013, at the Samford Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs breezed to a quick 2-0 lead last year as both Lewis and Mallory coasted to identical 6-0, 6-0 wins over their Gamecocks' counterparts on courts No. 1 and No. 4.
Sarah Gail Niebur then extended Samford's advantage to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Kelly Tomlin in the No. 6 singles contest.
In the clinching match of the night, the Bulldogs' N'tcha rallied from behind to tally a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 2 singles contest. With her victory, N'tcha secured Samford's 4-1 team win over Jacksonville State.
Following Wednesday's in-state showdown with Jacksonville State, the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Feb. 26, at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs conclude their three-match homestand versus the UAB Blazers.
