'Dogs Defeat Mountaineers In SoCon Opener, 4-3

Samford will next be in action Sunday at Western Carolina

BOONE, N.C. -- The Samford University women's tennis team extended its season-long winning streak to four-consecutive matches Saturday as the Bulldogs posted a 4-3 Southern Conference-opening triumph against the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a road contest held at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
 
With its victory, Samford (6-1, 1-0 SoCon) remained undefeated in nearly three weeks and moved to 1-1 when playing on the road this season. So far, the Bulldogs' lone loss of the 2014 dual-match campaign occurred Feb. 9 at No. 21-ranked Auburn, 4-0.
 
Since then, Samford has rattled off consecutive victories against UTSA, 6-1, Jacksonville State, 7-0, UAB, 6-1, and Appalachian State (3-6, 0-1 SoCon), 4-3.
 
The Bulldogs dominated doubles play Saturday and swept the competition with lopsided scores of 8-3, 8-3 and 8-2. Samford's current doubles team's consisting of Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N'tcha, as well as Emily Mallory and Lauren Caballero are both undefeated this season.
 
After claiming Saturday's doubles point to garner an early 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs continued their momentum in singles play and quickly built a 3-1 advantage with victories from Ebada on court No. 3, 6-3, 6-2, and N'tcha on court No. 2, 6-3, 6-2.
 
Ebada, Samford's talented native of Cairo, Egypt, and N'tcha, the Bulldogs' dynamic native of Abomey-Calavi, Benin, both own unblemished 6-0 records in singles play this season. As a team, Samford is 30-9 in singles matches, as well as 16-3 in doubles.
 
Appalachian State's Clare Cox tallied a victory on court No. 1, to trim Samford's overall lead in the match to 3-1, but then the Bulldogs' Caballero clinched the win at singles No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over McKayla Zupan.
 
After the match was decided, the Mountaineers tallied victories on courts No. 4 and No. 5, to make the final score, 4-3.
 
The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs conclude their weekend SoCon road trip against the Western Carolina Catamounts in Cullowhee, N.C.
