BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team handed the South Alabama Jaguars their first loss of the 2014 dual-match season Friday as the Bulldogs rallied for a 5-2 South Region triumph over their in-state rivals at the Samford Tennis Center.
With Friday's victory,
Samford (8-1) extended its season-long winning streak to six-consecutive matches. Since falling at No. 21-ranked Auburn on Feb. 9, the Bulldogs have reeled off straight triumphs against UTSA, Jacksonville State, UAB, Appalachian State, Western Carolina and
South Alabama (8-1).
Samford put a convincing end to the Jaguars' school-record, eight-match winning streak Friday.
South Alabama won the all-important doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, but then the Bulldogs received consecutive straight-set victories from
Stephanie N'tcha and
Yasmeen Ebada to give Samford a 2-1 lead in the match.
N'tcha cruised to a 6-4, 6-4, triumph in the No. 1 singles contest, while Ebada, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, remained undefeated on the season and improved her record to 8-0 in dual-match play this year on court No. 3.
In the No. 2 singles match, South Alabama's Laura Valkova registered a victory to even the score of the in-state duel at 2-2.
Samford then dominated the bottom half of the singles lineup and rode wins on courts No. 4, 5 and 6, to register its 5-2 team triumph. The Bulldogs' depth has been a huge advantage this season as
Jessica Northcutt boasts a 7-2 record at court No. 4,
Emily Mallory is 5-1 on court No. 5 and
Lauren Caballero owns a 4-2 record in the No. 6 singles matches.
Overall, Samford has accumulated a 40-11 record in singles play, as well as a 20-5 mark in doubles.
The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at noon as the Bulldogs resume play in its SoCon schedule at home against the Georgia Southern Eagles. Sunday's contest will also be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
