Bulldogs Begin Five-Match Homestand Versus Lipscomb

Samford boasts a brilliant 13-2 overall record this season

Senior Emily Mallory and the Bulldogs own a 13-2 record this season and are off to their best start in school history.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team will begin play in a critical five-match, regular season-ending homestand Wednesday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs welcome the Lipscomb Lady Bisons to the Samford Tennis Center for a key midweek nonconference showdown.

Samford (13-2), which is off to its best start in school history, recently concluded a three-match Spring Break road trip with a 7-0 Southern Conference victory Sunday over the Wofford Terriers.

Against Wofford, the Bulldogs swept Sunday's doubles point and then cruised to singles victories on all six courts. Samford's 7-0 sweep proved to be its fourth of the 2014 campaign.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs' No. 1 combination of Stephanie N'tcha and Kristin Lewis tallied an 8-5 victory over the Terriers' duo comprised of Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson, 8-5. With their win, the tandem improved its undefeated record on the season to 5-0.

Samford also dominated singles play Sunday and registered straight-set triumphs on courts No. 2-6.

All with wins against Wofford, the Bulldogs' Lewis improved to 9-6, Yasmeen Ebada moved to 13-1 and Jessica Northcutt increased her dual-match record to 12-3. Additionally, Samford's Emily Mallory improved to 10-2 this season, while Carita Moolman breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph on court No. 6 to move to a perfect 4-0 this spring.

In the closest match of the day, Samford's N'tcha outlasted the Terriers' Evans, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (13), in a marathon contest held on court No. 1. With her triumph, N'tcha improved her record on the season to 11-3.

Comprehensively this year, the Bulldogs boast a 33-10 overall record in doubles play, as well as a brilliant 69-18 mark in the singles competition.

Lipscomb (9-6) heads into Wednesday's contest with a full head of steam after earning a decisive 6-0 triumph over cross-town rival Tennessee State on Friday.

In their lopsided victory, the Lady Bisons' won all six singles matches in straight sets. Lipscomb junior Deahna Welcher defeated the Tigers' Victoria Haynes, 6-1, 6-1, on court No. 1. Melissa Kromer on court No.2, Laura Kent at No. 3 and Lorena Djuknic at No. 5 also won their respective matches with ease.

Lipscomb has been victorious in three of its last four matches and owns a 4-4 record when playing on the road this season.

Samford's Ebada proved to be one of the top competitors in the SoCon last week. In three team matches, she registered a 4-2 overall record as the Bulldogs garnered a 2-1 mark, including a key 7-0 league road triumph over Wofford on Sunday.

In a trio of road matches at UCF, No. 68-ranked Furman and Wofford, Samford's Ebada posted a 2-1 mark in singles play, as well as a 2-1 record in the doubles competition, despite playing with two different partners.

Against No.68 Furman on Saturday, Ebada tallied a critical 6-4, 6-4 singles triumph over Katherine Oudin on court No. 3, as the Bulldogs nearly pulled off the come-from-behind road victory.

Following Wednesday's nonconference matchup against Lipscomb, the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at 10 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs begin a crucial SoCon home weekend against the Elon Phoenix. On Sunday, Samford will also play host to the UNCG Spartans at the Samford Tennis Center.
