BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team will attempt to make school history Saturday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs look to complete its 2014 home schedule with a perfect 13-0 record against the Chattanooga Mocs in a critical Southern Conference contest to be held at the Samford Tennis Center on Senior Day.
During Saturday's match, the Bulldogs will honor and thank two special members of the 2014 Samford women's tennis program in seniors
Kristin Lewis and
Emily Mallory.
Both Lewis and Mallory have played major roles in the Bulldogs' successes over the last five seasons and will go down in Samford lore as two of the top competitors in school history.
Since stepping foot on campus, these Bulldogs have helped guide their team to a brilliant 76-34 overall record, including a remarkable 32-15 mark against SoCon opponents. Additionally, both of these student-athletes have already earned their bachelor degrees and will graduate with their master's in business administration next month.
Kristin Lewis first senior broke into the Bulldogs' starting lineup as a freshman in 2010. During her first season at Samford, she compiled a stellar 17-3 record in singles play and also earned Second-Team All-SoCon honors for her tremendous efforts in doubles. She was additionally honored by being named a member of the 2011 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
As a sophomore, Lewis continued her dominant play in doubles and earned First-Team All-SoCon honors, while partnering with teammate Lindsey Mallory.
In the classroom, Lewis also proved to be a force as she earned 2013 Spring Academic All-SoCon honors by posting a sterling 3.88 grade-point average in interior design. So far this season, Lewis has played a key role in the Bulldogs' 17-2 overall record, which is the best in school history. She owns a 12-7 singles record in dual-match play this year, and has also posted a 12-5 mark in doubles.
Emily Mallory started competing in 2010 and immediately claimed the Flight II singles championship at the North Florida Hampton Inn Invitational as she cruised to a perfect 3-0 record. She also advanced to the championship final of the Singles B Draw at the 2010 USTA-ITA Southeast Regionals.
As a sophomore, Mallory continued her impressive play in singles and finished the season ranked fifth in the SoCon with a 78-percent winning mark. During her junior campaign, she concluded dual-match play with a team-best 14-7 overall record, as well as a brilliant 7-3 mark in SoCon action.
In the classroom, Mallory was named to the 2013 Spring Academic All-SoCon team by registering an impressive 3.81 grade-point average in business/economics. Already this year, she has also played a huge role in the Bulldogs' 17-2 overall record, which is the best in school history. Mallory owns a 14-2 singles record in dual-match play and has also posted a 13-5 mark in doubles.
On Wednesday,
Samford (17-2, 7-1 SoCon) extended its home winning streak to 14-consecutive matches as the Bulldogs earned a 5-2 in-state triumph over the Troy Trojans in a key nonconference contest held the Samford Tennis Center.
With the victory, Samford remained undefeated at home this season and upped its unblemished 2014 record to 12-0 when playing at the Samford Tennis Center. The Bulldogs have not been defeated at home in well over a year, dating back to March 23, 2013.
Chattanooga (17-3, 7-1 SoCon) also enters Saturday's contest in the midst of one of its best seasons in school history. The Mocs have been victorious in four-consecutive matches and have not been defeated since losing at No. 68-ranked Furman, 4-3, on March 30.
Additionally, Chattanooga has been triumphant in 13 of its last 14 outings with all of the Mocs' losses this season coming against nationally-ranked opponents.
Samford's only setbacks this season came against No. 21-ranked Auburn and No. 68 Furman, while Chattanooga's 2014 losses were to No. 27 Tennessee, No. 33 Memphis and No. 68 Furman.
In the Mocs' most recent outing, they closed out their regular season home schedule with a 7-0 shutout against Lee College. Chattanooga only dropped a total of 10 games in the nine wins held at the UTC Tennis Courts.
Kaylene Chadwell and Jovana Pecovski opened the Mocs' victory over Lee College with an 8-0 victory over Jodie Rice and Krista Good at No. 2. Sophomore Alison Storie and freshman Rachele Gazzola then clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 win against Kelsey Lovingood and Annie Sandberg at No. 3.
In singles play, Chattanooga senior Alexa Flynn put the Mocs up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Maclain Yowarsky at No. 2. Sophomore Kayla Jones then followed that with a win at No. 1 as junior Claire Mulyadi secured the team outcome with her victory at No. 3. Storie, Gazzola and Pecovski also had singles wins in the match.
Saturday's showdown between Samford and Chattanooga will mark the final SoCon contest of the 2014 regular season.
The Bulldogs and Mocs are both 7-1 in SoCon play this year, and the winner of Saturday's meeting will finish no worse than second in the SoCon race. Furman currently sits in first place with an 8-0 league mark with one match left to play.
Following Saturday's regular-season finale, the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn., as the Bulldogs begin play in the 2014 SoCon Tournament. The official bracket for next week's all-important postseason championship will be released Saturday evening.
