Baseball Drops Game Three At Davidson

Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision in the final game of its three-game Southern Conference series at Davidson Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
 
Samford falls to 21-15 overall and 7-5 in the SoCon with the loss. Davidson improves to 22-10 overall and 12-3 in league games. Davidson wins the series, two games to one.
 
Senior catcher Drew McWhorter led Samford offensively, with a two-run home run, going 1-for-4 at the plate. T.J. Dixon and Tyler Filliben also had one hit each for the Bulldogs. Alex Milazzo (3-2) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
 
Davidson was led by Nathan Becker, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Andrew Pope, Ryan Lowe and Ben Arkin had two hits and an RBI each. David Daniels also homered for the Wildcats, going 1-for-5 with one RBI.
 
Nick Neitzel (6-0) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits to earn the win on the mound for Davidson. Durin O'Linger pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit to pick up his first save of the season.
 
Davidson grabbed an early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Becker singled to lead off the inning. Becker later scored when Arkin grounded out to shortstop for a 1-0 Davidson lead.
 
The Wildcats added three runs in the bottom of the third inning to push their lead to 4-0. Pope led the inning off with a single and later scored on a single by Lowe. Becker later homered with Lowe on base for a four-run Davidson lead.
 
Davidson plated another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arkin led the inning off with a single. He later scored from third base on a Samford error to make the score 5-0.
 
Samford put its two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs in the inning, Filliben doubled down the right-field line. McWhorter then hit a home run to left field to cut the Davidson lead to 5-2.
 
Davidson added to its lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Daniels led the inning off with a home run down the left-field line for a 6-2 Davidson lead.
 
The Wildcats plated another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to push their lead to 7-2. Arkin led the inning off with a double. With two outs, Arkin scored on a single by Pope for a five-run Davidson lead.
 
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, April 15, when the Bulldogs play host to the Auburn Tigers. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
