Women's Tennis To Play Host To Troy Wednesday

The Bulldogs are in the midst of a 13-match home winning streak

Junior Stephanie N'tcha and the Bulldogs boast a perfect 11-0 record at home this season and have not been defeated at the Samford Tennis Center in well over a year.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University women's tennis team will attempt to extend its nonconference winning streak to eight-consecutive matches Wednesday as the Bulldogs square off against the Troy Trojans in a key Southern Region contest to be held at 2 p.m. (CDT) at the Samford Tennis Center.

Samford (16-2) is in the midst of a four-match winning streak and boasts a perfect 11-0 record when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs are also 9-1 against nonconference opponents and have rattled off consecutive victories over UTSA, Jacksonville State, UAB, South Alabama, Charlotte, UCF and Lipscomb.

On Sunday, Samford tallied its sixth shutout victory of the dual-match campaign, including its third in four outings, as the Bulldogs blanked the UNCG Spartans, 7-0, in a late-season Southern Conference contest held indoors at the Samford Tennis Center.

With its lopsided victory, Samford remained undefeated at home this season and extended its winning streak at the Samford Tennis Center to 13-consecutive matches.

The Bulldogs proved to be triumphant in all nine of its contests against UNCG. They swept the three doubles matches Sunday and then breezed to six straight-set victories in the singles competition.

Comprehensively this season, Samford owns a sterling 41-11 record in doubles play, including an impressive 20-4 mark against SoCon opponents. The Bulldogs also hold a remarkable 85-20 record in singles play.

Samford's doubles combinations of Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N'tcha, as well as Yasmeen Ebada and Carita Moolman are both undefeated this season. Lewis and N'tcha, the Bulldogs' No. 1 doubles tandem, boasts an unblemished 6-0 record in dual-match play, while Ebada and Moolman are also perfect at 5-0.

In singles play Sunday, Samford's N'tcha, Lewis and Ebada were all victorious to improve their singles records on the year to 14-3, 11-7 and 16-1, respectively. Mallory, the Bulldogs' talented senior of Louisville, Ky., was also triumphant in singles play and holds the team's longest winning streak at seven-consecutive matches.

Samford dominated the bottom half of the singles competition versus UNCG.

Mallory cruised to a victory on court No. 5, while Northcutt notched a win on court No. 4 and Lauren Cabellero defeated the Spartans' Devon Sutherland in the No. 6 singles contest. With their triumphs, Northcutt moved to 14-4 this season and Caballero improved to 11-3.

Troy (12-6) also heads into Wednesday's showdown boasting a winning streak. The Trojans are in the midst of a seven-match winning stretch and have been victorious in 10 of their last 11 outings.

In its most recent contest, Troy cruised past the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 4-1, on the road in Jacksonville on April 1. The Trojans surrendered their lone point in a singles match on court No. 6 that Jacksonville State won by default due to a Troy injury.

The doubles point was in doubt early as the Gamecocks tallied a win at No. 2, but the Trojans recovered with an 8-3 win by Trang Huynh and Anja Cosovic on court No. 1 to even the score. The duo now owns an impressive 14-2 record on the season and has won 13-straight matches.

Brooke Durden and Hannah Toro then clinched the opening point for the Trojans with their 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Troy's Lyubov Dorofeeva was injured, vacating her usual No. 2 position in the singles lineup.  The Trojans then moved everybody up one spot in the lineup, and Jacksonville State won at No. 6 singles by default to even the match at 1-1.

Despite the injury, Troy cruised to the win, however, starting with Huynh at No. 1, who won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The sophomore has now won seven straight singles matches and is 14-4 on the season.

Cosovic followed Huynh with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, which was also her seventh-consecutive singles win. Cosovic is now 15-2 on the season with the victory being her first at the No. 2 spot. Durden later clinched the match for Troy with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5.

Following Wednesday's in-state showdown with Troy, the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at noon as the Bulldogs complete their regular-season schedule against the Chattanooga Mocs in a critical SoCon matchup to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
