Live StatsCLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The Samford University soccer team will square off against a former Ohio Valley Conference rival on the road Friday as the Bulldogs conclude a three-match road swing against the Austin Peay Lady Govs in a non-conference contest to be held at Morgan Brothers Field.
Samford (4-4) heads into Friday's matchup looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2-0 setback at Lipscomb on Sunday. With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 3-2 on the road this season.
Heading into its match with Lipscomb, Samford was in the midst of a three-match road winning streak, which included consecutive victories against No. 18-ranked Auburn, 2-1, Jacksonville State, 3-2, and Georgia State, 2-1.
Before Sunday's loss to the Lady Bisons, the Bulldogs' only other road defeat on the season was a hard-fought 2-0 decision at No. 14 South Carolina.
Samford was outshot by Lipscomb, 11-4, in the first half of play, but the Bulldogs rebounded to even the total at 4-4 in the final stanza.
Austin Peay (1-6) enters Friday's contest with aspirations of snapping a five-match losing streak. Since dominating Southern Conference foe Chattanooga in their 2014 home-opener on Aug. 24, 5-2, the Lady Govs have suffered consecutive losses to Alabama, 5-0, Lipscomb, 2-0, Kennesaw State, 1-0, Middle Tennessee, 2-0, and Ole Miss, 2-0.
In Austin Peay's home loss to Ole Miss on Sunday, the Lady Govs held tough against the Rebels for much of the first half.
After struggling to get forward against their previous Southeastern Conference opponent, Alabama, on Aug. 29, Austin Peay was able to string together several first-half opportunities, including a 21st-minute attempt from freshman Caroline Wistrom that hit the post and a 35th-minute shot from senior Claire Pultz that was snared by Ole Miss' goalkeeper Kelly McCormick.
All of the Rebels' offensive success came in a three-minute span. In the 39th minute, Olivia Harrison beat sophomore Katie Emig to the lower left corner from 12 yards out, and came back less than three minutes later to deposit a through-ball into the box from Bethany Bunker to make it a decisive 2-0 score.
Samford and Austin Peay will square off on the pitch for a seventh time Friday. The Bulldogs head into the matchup boasting a 5-0-1 all-time record against the Lady Govs, while winning the last meeting between the teams, 2-1, on Oct. 21, 2007, held at Bulldog Field.
In the last meeting held in Clarksville, Samford earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision on Oct. 15, 2004.
Following Friday's contest at Austin Peay, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 2 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return home to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for a key non-conference showdown against the Kennesaw State Owls.
