"Overall, I feel this was a very productive weekend for us considering it was our first tournament of the fall," said Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail. "Our main objectives in the fall are to work on aspects of our game as individuals and as a team in order to be prepared for the spring season. We were able to get a lot of match play in this weekend and see some things that are essential for us to work on in order to get better."
In Sunday's consolation rounds of the groundbreaking fall tournament, the Bulldogs'
Fares Kilani and
Liam Sullivan both suffered losses in singles play.
Kilani, Samford's junior native of Tunis, Tunisia, squared off against Tulane's Alex Van Cott in the No. 1 singles bracket, but dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision in the contest.
Additionally, in the No. 3 singles draw, the Bulldogs' Sullivan found himself matched up against South Alabama's Juan Troglia in consolation action. Sullivan, Samford's up-and-coming sophomore from Richmond, Va., nearly toppled Troglia in the first set, 7-5, before suffering a 6-0 setback in the second-and-final frame.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action this weekend, Friday through Sunday, as the Bulldogs return home to the Samford Tennis Center to compete in the highly-anticipated 2014 Samford Fall Invitational.
