Soccer Heads To Charleston For Match At The Citadel

Samford is in the midst of a three-match winning streak

Live Stats

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Samford University soccer team will compete in its first Southern Conference road match of the season Friday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against The Citadel Bulldogs in an early league contest to be held at the WLI Field.

Samford (7-4, 2-0 SoCon) enters the matchup boasting a three-game winning streak. Since barely coming up short at home against Georgia on Sept. 13, 1-0, the Bulldogs have rattled off consecutive victories over Kennesaw State, 5-2, Furman, 2-0, and Wofford, 1-0.

Friday's match will mark just Samford's third road challenge of the 2015 campaign. The Bulldogs have played nine of their first 11 matches at home this season and compiled a 6-3 record in the friendly confines of the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

On the road this season, the Bulldogs have dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 11-ranked Auburn on Sept. 4, and then posted a lopsided 5-2 triumph at Kennesaw State on Sept. 20.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
The Citadel (1-10, 0-1 SoCon) heads into Friday's contest with hopes of snapping its three-match losing streak. Since defeating Francis Marion, 4-0, on Sept. 13, the Cadets have dropped a trio of road matches at Winthrop, 3-0, College of Charleston, 5-0, and Mercer, 3-0. The Citadel opened its 2015 campaign with seven-consecutive losses, six of which were shutout defeats.

The Cadets own a 1-4 record at home this season and have been outscored by a total of 37-6 this year.

The Citadel's Emilie Valenciano leads the team with 20 shots and 14 shots on goal in 2015, and is followed closely by Katherine Arroyo who has tallied 17 shots.

The Cadets currently lead the SoCon in saves with 92 so far this season. Abby Koger has 57 saves on the season and Sam Millspaugh has a .731 save percentage in six games played.

SAMFORD vs. THE CITADEL - - THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Samford owns a 7-1-1 all-time record against The Citadel and is in the midst of a two-match winning streak in the rivalry. The Bulldogs' lone loss to the Cadets occurred in 2013 as The Citadel stunned Samford in a 3-2 victory held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.

Since then, the Bulldogs have tallied a pair of home wins over the Cadets, including a 6-0 triumph last season in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament. The teams have not squared off in Charleston since 2012 when Samford earned a 2-0 victory.

IN THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN THE TEAMS
Samford registered its most dominant SoCon Tournament triumph in school history last season as the Bulldogs received goals from six different players en route to a momentous 6-0 victory over The Citadel in a quarterfinal round matchup held in Birmingham, Alabama.

In Samford's seven full years in the SoCon, the Bulldogs have reached at least the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament in all seven seasons.

All six of Samford's goals against The Citadel last season were scored by different players. Anna Allen tallied the game-winning score at exactly 15 minutes into the first half, while the remaining five goals occurred in the final stanza and were tabbed by Katie Danehy, Jermaine Seoposenwe, Heather Lacy, Kinsey Sessions and Sara Smeltzer.

SAMFORD'S MADDOX NAMED SOCON STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Samford's Anna Maddox garnered one of the SoCon's top honors Wednesday as the Bulldogs' sophomore goalkeeper was named the league's General Shale Student-Athlete of the Week, it was officially announced by the conference office.

Maddox, a sophomore from Warner Robins, Georgia, recorded a complete-game shutout against rival Furman on Friday in the Bulldogs' 2-0 win. She made three pivotal saves and faced nine shots during the contest, while being able to maintain a clean sheet. A nursing major, Maddox currently holds a 3.90 grade point average

COLE NAMED NATIONAL PRIMETIME PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Samford's Olivia Cole received a prestigious national honor Wednesday as the Bulldogs' junior defender was named a Division I Primetime Performer of the Week by College Soccer 360. Cole proved to be just one of 15 players in the nation to garner the honor.

Cole played a critical role in the Bulldogs' 2-0 SoCon-opening weekend last week in shutout victories against Furman, 2-0, and Wofford, 1-0. On Friday, Samford's defense stood strong in a huge home win over Furman as the Bulldogs snapped a three-match losing streak in the rivalry.

Cole, Samford's junior defender from Orlando, Florida, anchored the team's back line against the Paladins that only allowed a total of nine shot attempts and four shots on goal. The Bulldogs, led by 5-foot-10 Cole, held All-SoCon standout Stephanie DeVita to just one shot attempt and kept fellow All-SoCon Preseason performer Carlie Couch without a goal.

WHAT'S COMING UP NEXT?
Following Friday's SoCon contest at The Citadel, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at noon (CDT) as the Bulldogs conclude their two-match weekend road trip against the Mercer Bears in a highly-awaited showdown to be held at Bear Field in Macon, Georgia.
