Why Volleyball Wears Orange Only Once A Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –For one match every season the Samford University volleyball team suits up in orange jerseys as a call-to-action to raise awareness about acute myeloid leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia hits more than just close to home as the program lost not only a teammate but a member of the Samford family in May 2013. Caroline Morgan Neisler, sister of current player Kate Neisler, passed away just weeks after learning of her diagnosis but fought to make sure her legacy was one where people remembered her for not giving up.

The Bulldogs started the Caro-Strong initiative as a way to keep Caroline's memory alive and have raised awareness about the disease through fundraising efforts with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by forming a walking team for the Light the Night Walk and organizing their annual "Dig Orange" match.

The orange jerseys worn by the Bulldogs in their "Dig Orange" match on Nov. 4, against Chattanooga will be auctioned off in a silent auction with the proceeds going directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Fans are encouraged to wear orange themselves for the match against the Mocs. The following night the team will walk in memory of Caroline at the Light the Night Walk which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Railroad Park.

Anyone who wishes to support the team in their efforts may do so by donating to their Light the Night team page linked below.
