BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University track and field teams competed in the Samford Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"I think this week shows we are ready to compete for the conference championships in two weeks." Samford head coach
Rod Tiffin mentioned. "It will be a a tough competition as always with Western Carolina but the two new additions of ETSU and VMI will make it even tougher."
"I can't wait, we have a some people still a little under the weather or banged up but I feel we are ready and the two weeks to get healed and really will help." Tiffin continued. "Our freshman have had a great first indoor campaign and have been everything that was advertised. They have grown up fast and are ready for the challenge."
Sidney Jordan was the most successful Bulldogs on the night after he posted a first place finish in the men's shot put with a personal best mark of 16.59m and third place finish in the men's weight throw with a toss of 18.32m which also qualified as a personal best. Jordan finished with a total of 16 points on the day.
A trio of Bulldogs tallied second place finishes in the meet with
Brandon Hazouri (1:49.70) in the men's 800 meters,
Keyth Fightmaster (2.10m) in the men's high jump and
Tray Oates (5.10m) in the men's pole vault.
Arsène Guillorel improved his time in the men's mile by 10 seconds with a personal best time of 4:08.44 to come in for a third place finish while
Javion Lee also tallied a third place finish with a personal best leap of 7.18m. Freshman
Gavin Gautreau tallied a third place finish in the men's pole vault with a mark of 5.10m for a personal best.
The Samford women ended the night with a seventh place finish amongst the field of 14 teams with a total of 29 total points.
Senior
Marie Demedicis posted the highest mark of the night for the Bulldog women with a second place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.18. Freshman
Karisa Nelson (2:13.23), senior
Anna Laura Irvine (2:13.86) and sophomore
Ansley Bos (2:14.20) followed up with sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes to score a combined 14 points in the event.
A pair of Bulldogs finished with two third place finishes in the field events with
Courtney Prengaman tallied a score of 1.60m in the high jump and
Aerial Horton who posted a mark of 17.16m in the women's weight throw.
Freshman
Sarah Sanford qualified for the 60 meter hurdle finals with a preliminary time of 8.60.
The Bulldogs will take a week off before they return to action on Feb. 27-28, for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships that will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
