Final ResultsPINEHURST, N.C. -- The Samford University men's golf team closed out the 2015 Southern Conference Championship in eighth place Tuesday as the Bulldogs completed the three-day, 54-hole event with a total score of 907 (305-298-304) at the Pinehurst No. 9 Golf Course.
Individually, Samford's
Garrett Moores turned in his best round of the tournament Tuesday and vaulted four positions from 13
th place up to ninth place in the final standings. Moores carded a final-round score of 1-under par 71 and concluded the three-round event with a 1-over par 217 (74-72-71).
Just a sophomore, Moores led all Bulldogs in the individual standings and posted his best finish of the season. His three-day total of 217 also proved to be his top performance of the 2014-15 campaign.
Moores' ninth-place finish was followed by
Robert Adams' 21
st-place outing in which Samford's sophomore native of Germantown, Tennessee, posted a three-day total of 226 (78-73-75).
The Bulldogs' starting lineup at the 2015 SoCon Championship featured five sophomores, making them the youngest team in the eight-team field. Despite its youth, Samford remained competitive at the tournament and finished just 17 strokes out of a top-five performance.
Ashton Nix (79-73-78=230) closed out the 54-hole competition tied for 27
th place, while
Austin Jackson (74-80-81=235) and
Ivan Truss (85-80-80=245) rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring at the event.
ETSU won the event in a playoff by one shot over UNCG. The Bucs held off a strong charge as the Spartans shot 7-under par 281 over the final 18 holes of action. It came down to the final hole with both Adrian Meronk and Jake McGlone missing the green. McGlone dropped a 25-foot par effort followed by Meronk from four feet.
ETSU parred out on the playoff hole, No. 18, while the Spartans posted a bogey to end it.
J.T. Poston of Western Carolina repeated as individual champion with a playoff birdie topping Meronk. The duo shot 9-under par 207, clearing Jake McGlone (UNCG) in third place by four strokes.
Chattanooga's Andrew Weathers earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors. Meronk garnered conference player of the year accolades, while ETSU's Fred Warren was tabbed coach of the year.
