HATCHER INTERVIEW
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team practiced in shells for the first time during fall practice Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs held a split-squad workout for the third day in a row.
Tuesday was the final day of the split-squad practices. First-year Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said, despite temperatures in the mid-90s, his team worked hard during Tuesday's workout.
"I thought our first practice was really good considering how hot it was today," Hatcher said. "The second practice, which probably has more newcomers than the first, was a little sluggish, especially at the end. But, the guys are pushing through, they're working hard and trying to learn. It will be good to see us all come together tomorrow and see what we're made of."
Samford returns seven starters on offense this season. One of the key starters returning is fifth-year senior quarterback
Michael Eubank. Hatcher praised the work of both Eubank and backup redshirt freshman
Devlin Hodges.
"Mike's been playing well," Hatcher said. "He has a great approach to the game right now. A guy who is playing at a really high level right now is
Devlin Hodges. So, it will be interesting to see how that battle plays out throughout the camp."
Samford has been through three practices so far in preseason camp. Hatcher said his team has displayed an outstanding attitude throughout the early part of preseason practice.
"Our overall attitude has been a pleasant surprise for me," Hatcher said. "We've come out with a workman-like attitude. I think we've been flying around, we've been coaching one another up hard. So, all in all, I feel good, even though today maybe wasn't quite as good as the first two. But, I expect tomorrow to be the best day of preseason so far."
Samford will practice again Wednesday in shells. The workout is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
Samford opens the 2015 season on Thursday, Sept. 3, when the Bulldogs play host to Central Arkansas. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Seibert Stadium.
