BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University men's tennis team will play its 2016 spring home opener when the Bulldogs host Kennesaw State Friday at 2 p.m. at the Samford Tennis Center.
Samford enters the match with a record of 0-1. The Bulldogs opened the spring season with a 6-1 loss at 65
th-ranked Alabama Monday evening.
In the loss at Alabama, sophomore
Jake Faundez earned the win at the No. 6 singles position. He defeated Alabama's Sam Edwards by scores of 3-6, 6-3 and 10-7.
Samford comes into the spring season returning five of its six main singles players from last year's team. Included in the returning starters are seniors
Fares Kilani and
Trey Carter, as well as sophomores
Faundez,
Justin Ghavami and
Eduardo Lourido Sanchez.
Also returning to the team this season are sophomore
Austin Heinz, junior
Austin Ferrer and redshirt junior
Henry Moore. New to the squad this season is Oklahoma State transfer
Leonard Gerch.
Friday afternoon's match will mark the spring season opener for Kennesaw State. The Owls finished last season with a mark of 7-12 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic Sun play. KSU returns seven of its 10 letterwinners from last year's squad.
The match will mark the first time Samford has taken on Kennesaw State in men's tennis.
