Track & Field Excels At Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Samford University track and field Head Coach Rod Tiffin entered the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational eager to discover how his teams would fare against a high-caliber field.

After two full days of competition against opponents from a number of major Division I schools, including Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State, he got his answer.

Led by the trio of Sarah Sanford, Brandon Hazouri and Arséne Guillorel, Bulldog athletes tallied 10 top-10 finishes while establishing four new school records.

Sanford, the Bulldogs' immensely talented sprinter/hurdler from nearby Hoover High School, lowered a pair of her own program marks, notching sizzling times of 8.42 seconds in the women's 60-meter hurdles and 56.34 seconds in the women's 400-meter dash. A testament to the quality of the competition, she finished seventh and 10th in each event, respectively.

"She's had a special career so far at Samford," Tiffin said. "She keeps getting better and better, and when you think that she's reached the pinnacle, she just gets better."

Hazouri, a 2015 800-meter qualifier for the NCAA Division I outdoor championships, clocked a blistering school-record time of 4:01.10 in the men's mile to earn a runner-up finish. After redshirting during cross-country in the fall, the mid-distance standout has etched a new mile record in each of his first two meets of the indoor season.

"I wanted to set myself up to run 3:59," Hazouri said, "so I wanted to be in position, with 400, 300 to go, I wanted to be on pace, and we figured I was strong enough to get there."

Although he was on target heading into the final quarter mile, Hazouri narrowly trailed off goal pace in the closing meters. Regardless, his prodigious time currently ranks 10th in the nation.

Following his teammate's example, Guillorel posted an equally impressive time in the men's 3,000 meters, crossing the line in 8:02.22 to secure the Bulldogs' lone individual victory of the meet. The native of Pontchateau, France, dominated the race, finishing over 10 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

Along with Hazouri, Guillorel's time also currently ranks among the top 10 nationally.

"Those guys are just running at another level for us right now," Tiffin said.

In addition to the aforementioned trio, Megan Meadow (triple jump), Selena Popp (high jump), Keyth Fightmaster (high jump), Brian Hill (weight throw), Tray Oates (pole vault) and Luke Weishaar (5,000 meters) all secured top-10 finishes in their respective events.

Despite placing outside of the top 10, senior sprinter/hurdler Kimberly Ruch continued her stellar start to the season, posting personal bests in all three of her events. Ruch led the women's sprint corps with times of 25.26 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 7.66 seconds in the 60-meter dash, finishing among the top 20 in both.

"Kimmy continues to impress. Most of the time, the way we look at the seniors is it can go one of two ways: you either go out the back door or they really step it up. That's what Kimmy's done," Tiffin said. "She's really taken her senior year, bull by the horns, and has had a very, very great senior year. I couldn't be more impressed."

Her finish position a direct byproduct of the competition, Tiffin knows that Ruch, like the rest of the women's team, should thrive when it's time to duel within the conference.

"I think the women's team is looking really, really strong right now, and I'm very happy with where we are. On the women's side at the conference level, I think we're really primed to do some big things."
