BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The Samford men's tennis team defeated Eastern Kentucky, 6-1, and Birmingham-Southern, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Complex.
 
With the wins, Samford improves to 5-3 on the season. EKU falls to 8-7, and BSC moves to 3-2.
 
"We are able to take a lot of positives out of today,"  Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "EKU is a very solid team – they are a team that is accustomed to winning. Their coach has done a great job with their program, as they are at the top of their conference every year. We knew that we had to bring a certain level today. Today was a good test for us, both physically and mentally. Being a double header, it is a test of conditioning and our ability to maintain a level of focus throughout the day. Today was good preparation for the upcoming weeks."
 
In the EKU match, Samford won the doubles point, two matches to one. The Bulldogs won at No. 2 doubles, where Eduardo Lourido Sanchez and Jake Faundez defeated Sebastian Mueller and Diego Asis, 6-4. Samford clinched the point at No. 3, where Fares Kilani and Justin Ghavami earned a 7-6 win over Diogo Soares and Indra Patwardhan.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, to earn the 6-1 victory.
 
At No. 1, Kilani defeated Alex Alvaro, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (7). Trey Carter earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mueller at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, Ghavami defeated Ramon van Flymen, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Leonard Gerch won at No. 4, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win over Soares. Faundez defeated Florian Graskamp, 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 6 position.
 
Against BSC, Samford swept all three doubles matches, and all six singles matches. In doubles, at No. 1 Carter and Gerch defeated Patrick Hire and Alex Makarenko, 6-0. At No. 2 Faundez and Sanchez earned a 7-5 win over Jacob Weinacker and Anthony Pellegrini. Austin Heinz and Klani won at No. 3, defeating Henry Crosby and David Goodloe, 6-0.
 
In singles, Samford won each match in straight sets. At the No. 1 position, Carter defeated Makarenko, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 2, Kilani earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Weinacker.
 
Ghavami won at No. 3, defeating Hire, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 4, Heinz defeated George Chunn, 6-1, 6-0. Gerch earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Pellegrini at No. 5, while Faundez won at No. 6 over Lee Thompson, 6-2, 6-0.
 
Samford will open Southern Conference play by hosting East Tennessee State on March 6. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Samford Tennis Complex.
