STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Samford men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision at 29^th-ranked Mississippi State Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on the MSU campus.
 
"We competed hard today overall," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "We were able to really push them at some spots which is something positive that we will take out of this. Mississippi State did a great job on Court 2 at raising their level to close out the match. We are competing well right now and will need to continue to do so in order to be successful. It's very positive to come here and compete against a ranked program and be able to push them at certain spots. "
 
In doubles, Samford's Trey Carter and Leonard Gerch fell to Nuno Borges and Niclas Braun, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. MSU secured the doubles point at No. 2 when Trevor Foshey and Vaughn Hunter defeated Justin Ghavami and Fares Kilani, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles match between Samford's Jake Faundez and Eduardo Lourido Sanchez and MSU's Rishab Agarwal and Luka Sucevic did not finish, but the match was knotted at 4-4 when it was called.
 
The No. 4 singles match finished first with Braun defeated Gerch, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 1 spot, Borges downed Kilani, 6-2, 6-1. Mississippi State wrapped up the win at the No. 2 singles spot where Agarwal defeated Carter, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
 
The No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots did not complete the match.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 1-2 on the young season. Mississippi State improves to 4-2 with the victory.
 
Samford will host Jacksonville State Sunday morning. The match is set for a 9 a.m. start from the Samford Tennis Complex.
