Spring Academic All-SoCon Team Includes 57 Bulldogs

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Samford University placed 57 student-athletes on the Southern Conference's Spring Academic All-Conference team, released by the league Monday morning.

Samford's 57 representatives were the second-most of any conference school, behind only Western Carolina with 61. Chattanooga came in third, placing 51 student-athletes on the team.

Among Samford's spring sports, women's indoor track and field, and women's outdoor track and field had eight representatives each to lead all Samford teams. Women's basketball was next, placing seven student-athletes on the team.

The men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, men's tennis and softball teams had five representatives each on the squad. Baseball and women's tennis followed with four student-athletes each on the team. Women's golf (3), men's golf (2) and men's basketball (1) also placed student-athletes on the Spring Academic All-SoCon team.

For the conference as a whole, the league's 10 women's outdoor track and field programs led the way with 71 Academic All-Conference selections, while the nine institutions that sponsor women's indoor track and field produced 59. The eight men's lacrosse teams were third with 47 honorees, followed closely by the nine baseball schools with 46.

Samford's 57 student-athletes on the team posted an average grade-point average of 3.59.

To be eligible for the Academic All-Conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the spring semester – a change from the previous criteria that was based on the GPA entering the semester of competition – and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

With the GPA component now based off of the student-athletes' averages at the end of the semester of competition, the Winter Academic All-SoCon team was eliminated, resulting in several track and field student-athletes appearing in the spring list twice, once each for the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Below is a list of Samford's student-athletes that made the 2016 Spring Academic All-SoCon team.
