BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford's
Jay Vines earned a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon Thursday as the Bulldogs' senior native of Dandridge, Tennessee, tallied a score of 4,522 in the one-day event held at the CrossPlex.

Vines, a top-notch hurdler by trade, excelled in the running events by registering 860 points in the 1,000-meter run, 797 in the 60-meter hurdles and 742 points in the 60-meter dash. His time of 2:41.21 in the 1,000-meter proved to be the best in the competition.

Samford's
Austin Billings garnered an 11-place finish in the heptathlon, while
Hunter Schlatter turned in a 12
th-place tally.

On the women's side, the Bulldogs'
Selena Popp notched a seventh-place finish in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,608. Her top event proved to be the high jump with a score of 830.

Samford's Erin Hines placed 11
th in the competition, while Lauren Bearn finished 19
th.

The Samford University track and field team will next be in action Friday at 10 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to compete in the 2017 Vanderbilt Invitational, which is being held Jan. 20-21, at the Vanderbilt University Multipurpose Facility.
