AUBURN, Ala. – The Samford women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 setback at No. 15 Auburn Saturday afternoon at Yarbrough Tennis Complex.
Auburn jumped out to an early lead by sweeping the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
The No. 2 doubles court was the first to finish, with
Savannah Wood and
Arianna Beltrame dropped a 6-2 decision to Roos van der Zwaan and Reka Muller of Auburn. At No. 3 doubles, Alannah Griffin and Andie Dikosavljevic of Auburn defeated Samford's
Elsa Pool and
Georgina Jupp, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles,
Ellie Gerlach and
Annika Hepp fell, 6-4 to Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo.
In singles,
Nadine de Villiers of Samford fell to van der Zwaan of Auburn, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 1, Wood dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Michaud. At No. 2, Gerlach fell to Dikosavljevic, 6-0, 6-1.
Samford's Hepp fell on the No. 6 court to Georgie Axon, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3, Pool was defeated by Russo, 6-1, 6-2. The final match to finish was at the No. 4 court where Beltrame fell to Griffin, 6-2, 6-4.
With the loss, Samford falls to 0-1 on the young season. Auburn improves to 1-0 with the win.
Samford will host Kennesaw State Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Samford Tennis Complex.
