MACON, Ga. -- The Samford University soccer team will begin play in an important Southern Conference road trip Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs square off against the Mercer Bears in a crucial league showdown to be held at Bear Field.

Samford (9-5-1, 5-0 SoCon) heads into the matchup with aspirations of extending its current eight-game winning streak. The Bulldogs have not been defeated since Sept. 3, and are also in the midst of a nine-match undefeated streak.

Since playing to a 1-1 home draw with Georgia on Sept. 8, the Bulldogs have rattled off consecutive victories against Western Kentucky, 1-0, UC Davis, 1-0, Saint Mary's (CA), 1-0, Western Carolina, 1-0, ETSU, 2-0, Chattanooga, 3-1, UNCG, 2-0, and VMI, 4-0.

In Sunday's wet and windy victory over the Keydets, Samford's
Jermaine Seoposenwe scored a key goal in the first half and set the school's all-time career record in the category with 35. Seoposenwe surpassed former Bulldog-great
Malcanisha Kelley's mark of 34, which she set last year during her senior season.

Samford has only allowed a total of three goals in its last 11 matches dating back to Aug. 27. During the stretch, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by a total of 21-3.

Samford, which has won three straight SoCon titles, is in the midst of a 15-match winning streak against conference opponents. The Bulldogs have not been defeated by a SoCon rival since Sept. 25, 2016, when they were topped at Furman, 3-2.

Head Coach
Todd Yelton owns an impressive 199-88-36 record at Samford and is only one win shy of reaching the prestigious 200-victory plateau. He has been named the SoCon Coach of the Year in each of the previous three seasons.

Mercer (9-6, 3-2 SoCon) enters Friday's marquee matchup with hopes of bouncing back from a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss at ETSU on Sunday. In the defeat, the Bears allowed the decisive goal in the 98th minute of action on a penalty kick. Mercer outshot the Bucs, 13-11, in the match.

Despite Sunday's road loss at ETSU, the Bears have been victorious in seven of their last nine outings. Mercer owns a 6-3 record at home this season, including a 2-1 mark against conference opponents. The Bears' lone home loss in league play occurred Sept. 29, versus Furman, 1-0.

Samford owns a 9-2-3 overall record against Mercer and earned a 2-0 victory at home last season. Former Bulldog
Sara Smeltzer and Seoposenwe scored goals in the win, while Samford outshot the Bears, 18-4.

Following Friday's key road test against Mercer, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs continue their weekend SoCon trip against The Citadel. The match will be played in Charleston, South Carolina, on The Citadel's campus at the Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field.
