BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team will conclude play in its three-match Southern Conference homestand Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs welcome the VMI Keydets to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for a midseason Southern Conference contest.
Â
Samford (8-5-1, 4-0 SoCon) heads into Sunday riding the positive momentum of a seven-match winning streak, as well as an eight-match undefeated streak. The Bulldogs' last loss of the season occurred well over a month ago, Sept. 3, in a tough 1-0 road defeat at Kennesaw State.
Â
On Friday, Samford extended its winning streak to seven by posting a 2-0 shutout victory against the UNCG Spartans. In the SoCon triumph, the Bulldogs used key goals from seniors
Jermaine Seoposenwe and
Abriella Argueta in the second half of action to garner the victory.
Â
Seoposenwe's team-leading eighth goal of the season occurred in the 73
rd minute of play, while Argueta followed quickly in the 76
th minute to notch her second score of the year.
Â
With her goal, Seoposenwe tied the school's all-time goals-scored record with 34. She moved even with for Bulldog-great
Malcanisha Kelley, who achieved the mark last season as a senior. Seoposenwe is the reigning SoCon Player of the Year, as well as the league's active career leader in points scored (100), goals (34), assists (32) and game-winning goals (15).
Â
Samford outshot UNCG, 25-7, and dictated the pace of play for a predominant portion of the match. The Bulldogs finished the contest with nine shots on goal, while the Spartans tallied three.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Anna Maddox, the reigning SoCon Athlete of the Month, notched three huge saves Friday and earned her sixth shutout of the season.
Â
Since playing to a home 1-1 draw with Georgia on Sept. 8, the Bulldogs have rattled off consecutive victories against Western Kentucky, 1-0, UC Davis, 1-0, Saint Mary's (CA), 1-0, Western Carolina, 1-0, ETSU, 2-0, Chattanooga, 3-1, and UNCG, 2-0.
Â
Samford has only allowed a total of three goals in its last 10 matches dating back to Aug. 27. During the stretch, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by a total of 17-3.
Â
Samford, which has won three straight SoCon titles, is in the midst of a 14-match winning streak against conference opponents. The Bulldogs have not been defeated by a SoCon rival since Sept. 25, 2016, when they were topped at Furman, 3-2.
Â
VMI (5-8-1, 2-2-1 SoCon) enters Sunday's match with a full head of steam after the Keydets earned a momentous 3-1 road victory at Chattanooga. In its triumph, VMI scored three second-half goals in less than 14 minutes of play to roll to victory.
Â
Chattanooga edged ahead 1-0 in the 51st minute on a goal by Jordan Mueller, but things turned around for VMI just over a minute later. Julianne Knoblett scored off a rebound to tie the game, and in the 54th minute, Sam Franklin ripped home a shot from 30 yards out to give the Keydets the lead for good.
Â
Sierra Brewer capped the scoring with a 66th minute goal as VMI goalkeeper Ceci Keppeler drilled a free kick from midfield that Brewer found and scored off. Keppeler was credited with an assist, the first assist for a VMI goalkeeper since Oct. 18, 2008 (Heidi Beemer).
Â
Samford owns a 5-0 all-time record against VMI. The teams' first meeting occurred Oct. 10, 2014, as the Bulldogs posted a 5-0 road victory in Lexington, Virginia.
Â
Samford has never allowed the Keydets to score a goal in five matches, as the Bulldogs have outscored VMI, 24-0, in the all-time series. Last season, Samford earned a 4-0 win in the regular season, along with a 5-0 triumph in the opening match of the SoCon Tournament.
Â
Following Sunday's home test against VMI, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Macon, Georgia, for a huge SoCon showdown against the Mercer Bears.
