Stellar Pitching Leads 'Dogs Past UNC Asheville, 4-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team only allowed one run on five hits Saturday as the Bulldogs' received outstanding pitching performances from Mikhail Cazenave, Connor Radcliff, Erin Baldwin and Wyatt Burns in a 4-1 home victory against UNC Asheville in the second outing of this weekend's three-game set being held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
Samford (2-0) scored runs in the third and fifth innings on solo homers from Kevin Williams, Jr., and Ayrton Schafer before putting the game out of reach with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Schafer, the Bulldogs' powerful true freshman designated hitter, also added an RBI in the sixth inning, while Anthony Mulrine garnered his third RBI in two days with a sacrifice fly.
 
Samford's Branden Fryman, Schafer and Williams, Jr., all tallied two-hit games Saturday, as T.J. Dixon added a single of his own.
 
Fryman, the Bulldogs' talented true freshman shortstop, turned in a perfect 2-for-2 outing at the plate Saturday. He also registered his first stolen base of the season and played brilliant defense all game. Samford's Schafer and Williams, Jr., both finished 2-for-3 at the dish, while T.J. Dixon turned in a 1-for-3 outing.
 
The Bulldogs' dynamic senior right-hander Cazenave (1-0) started the game on the mound and earned the victory after striking out seven UNC Asheville (0-2) hitters and only allowing three hits. He didn't give up a single walk and logged six full innings of action.
 
Samford's Wyatt Burns, who was recently added to the 2017 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List, garnered his second save in two days Saturday by pitching a perfect ninth inning. The Bulldogs' Radcliff and Baldwin both did solid jobs in their setup roles.
 
The Samford University baseball team will try for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in the third-and-final game of the season-opening set.
