TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Samford University baseball team rallied to score three runs in the top of the eighth inning Sunday on the road against No. 5 Florida State, but it proved to be too little too late, as the Seminoles earned a 13-4 victory at home in a non-conference matchup held at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.

With the loss,
Samford (2-4) suffered its fourth straight defeat. Three of those have come on the road against
Florida State (5-2), the No. 5-ranked team in the nation.

The Bulldogs will next be in action Tuesday at 3 p.m. (CT) as they remain on the road to face a tough Auburn squad in an in-state matchup to be held at Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama.

Big innings hurt the Bulldogs on Sunday as Florida State erupted for five runs in the second, three in the fourth and four in the seventh. The Seminoles also added a run in the fifth frame.

Samford used a double from senior
T.J. Dixon and an RBI single to right field from freshman
Branden Fryman to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Dixon and Fryman paced the Bulldogs' offense with a pair of 2-for-4 performances at the plate. Dixon scored a pair of runs and tallied an RBI in the eighth inning, while Fryman added a run scored.

Kevin Williams, Jr.,
Austin Edens and
Greg Mula also added base hits Sunday.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Bulldogs' Mula roped a double down the third base line and later scored as Dixon singled to left field on an 0-2 count. Fryman then reached on an infield single as Dixon advanced to third base on the play.

Samford scored its second run of the inning when Williams, Jr., knocked a single to center field. The Bulldogs' third run of the frame, and their fourth of the game, occurred later in the inning as Edens sent a laser up the middle for an RBI single.

Williams and Edens both finished 1-for-4 at the dish Sunday, while Mula turned in a 1-for-2 outing.

Samford's
Stephen Jones (0-1) returned to his hometown of Tallahassee on Sunday, but suffered the loss. He tallied four strikeouts and was replaced on the hill in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs used eight pitchers on the day as they closed out their three-game road series against Florida State.

The Seminoles'
Drew Parrish (1-0) earned the start and tallied six strikeouts in six innings. Florida State's freshman picked up the victory and left the matchup with a 9-1 lead heading into the seventh frame.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 3 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs conclude their arduous four-game road stretch with an in-state contest against the Auburn Tigers. Tuesday's game will be held at Auburn's Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park.
