OXFORD, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team saw its impressive six-game, early-season winning streak come to an end Tuesday as the Bulldogs suffered a 9-5 road defeat against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a non-conference contest held at Choccolocco Park.
Â
Samford (9-6) surrendered six runs in the first two innings of play against
Jacksonville State (8-7) and couldn't overcome the early deficit. The Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, but their late rally came up short on the road. Samford owns a 7-2 record at home this season, yet is only 2-4 when playing away from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Â
The Gamecocks'
Corley Woods (1-0) came on in relief in the fourth inning and slowed the Bulldogs' offensive attack enough to earn the victory. Woods struck out six and only allowed three hits in 3.2 innings of action.
Â
Samford's
Connor Radcliff (1-1) had a hard time overcoming a 108-minute umpire delay Tuesday and suffered his first loss of the season. The Bulldogs' talented sophomore from Birmingham finished with a pair of strikeouts in 1.2 innings, but allowed four earned runs.
Â
Tuesday's game was delayed for over an hour and 45 minutes due to a lack of umpires. The blue crew was under the impression that the contest started at 6 p.m., instead of the correct first-pitch expectation of 3 p.m.
Â
Samford's
Austin Edens continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. The Bulldogs' junior first baseman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, extended his hitting streak to eight straight games and improved his batting average to .529 in Samford's last four outings.
Â
Speaking of hitting streaks, the Bulldogs'
T.J. Dixon extended his team-best mark to 14 on Tuesday. Samford's speedy centerfielder went 1-for-5 at the plate.
Branden Fryman,
Troy Dixon,
Grant Colton,
Jordan Fucci,
Ben Carrick and
Taylor Garris also posted base hits for the Bulldogs.
Â
Troy Dixon and Fucci both connected on impressive home runs against Jacksonville State. The round-trippers proved to be their firsts of the season.
Â
The Bulldogs outhit Jacksonville State, 9-7, but Samford committed four costly errors leading to three unearned runs.
Â
The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs head west to Tuscaloosa for a key midweek matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide. The in-state contest will be played at the University of Alabama's Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
