MACON, Ga. – The Samford women's tennis team opened Southern Conference play with a 5-2 setback at Mercer Wednesday afternoon.
 
Mercer won on the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts to earn that point. Samford took the match on the No. 2 doubles court, with Savannah Wood and Arianna Beltrame downing Andrea Peteu and Marie Mottet, 6-1.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins on the No. 2 and No. 4 courts. On No. 2, Ellie Gerlach defeated Grace Korta, 7-5, 6-3. At No. 4, Beltrame earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mottet.
 
Mercer took the singles matches on the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 courts to earn the 5-2 victory.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. Mercer improves to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in league play.
 
Samford will return to action on Saturday, March 25, when the Bulldogs host ETSU. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Samford Tennis Center.
