LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Samford University baseball team opened its 2017 Southern Conference schedule in forgettable fashion Friday as the Bulldogs were limited to three hits in a 4-0 road loss against the VMI Keydets in a series-opening contest held at Gray-Minor Stadium.
 
With the loss, Samford (16-10, 0-1 SoCon) had its winning streak snapped at three. The Bulldogs also moved to 6-7 when playing on the road this season.
 
Samford's offense was held scoreless for just the second time this year. The Bulldogs' previous shutout occurred Feb. 25, in an 8-0 road loss at No. 5-ranked Florida State.
 
VMI (13-13, 2-2 SoCon) extended its winning streak to three Friday and registered eight hits in the victory. The Keydets scored two runs in the second, one in the fifth and notched their final tally in the seventh inning.
 
Josh Winder (4-2) proved to be brilliant on the mound for VMI as he hurled the complete-game shutout victory. The complete game proved to be Winder's third straight. The Keydets' talented sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, struck out 12 Samford batters in the contest, while only allowing four base-runners.
 
The Bulldogs' hits Friday were tallied by true freshman catcher Anthony Mulrine and sophomore designated hitter Sam Teague.
 
Mulrine turned in a 2-for-3 performance at the dish, while Teague closed out the game with a 1-for-3 outing. Samford's T.J. Dixon also reached base for the 25th time out of 26 games as he drew a walk in the top of the ninth inning.
 
VMI's Jake Huggins paced his team with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate, as well as a key two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Samford's Mikhail Cazenave (2-3) started the game on the mound and suffered the loss. He earned 10 strikeouts in the decision, but allowed four earned runs in 6.2 inning of action. The Bulldogs' Hamp Skinner and Tristan Widra also received some time in the defeat.
 
Samford and VMI will square off in game two of this weekend's three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m. (CT) to be held at Gray-Minor Stadium.
