Williams' Walk-Off Blast Demoralizes Indiana, 6-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Samford University baseball team trailed the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, 5-3, when the Bulldogs' Kevin Williams, Jr., sent a deep three-run homer over the wall in left field to secure the team's thrilling 6-5 walk-off victory held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford (4-5) improved to 3-2 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs' Tanner Cunningham (1-0) earned the victory on the mound, while Indiana (4-5-1) dropped to 2-3-1 in true road games this season.
 
Samford's Greg Mula opened the ninth inning by reaching on an errant throw by Hoosiers' third baseman Luke Miller. He then advanced to second base with one out in the inning when Branden Fryman roped a single through the left side of the infield.
 
It was then that Williams, Jr., powered his team-leading fifth home run of the season over the left field wall for the game-winner.
 
Williams finished the game hitting 2-for-5 from the field with three RBI and two runs scored. Samford's Troy Dixon, Anthony Mulrine and Fryman also posted multi-hit outings against Indiana on Saturday. Dixon notched a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI, while Mulrine and Fryman both went 2-for-4.
 
The Bulldogs' T.J. Dixon, Austin Edens and Jordan Fucci all added hits as well in the victory.
 
Indiana's Pauly Milton (0-1) was issued the loss after allowing the game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
 
The Hoosiers garnered a 5-0 lead by scoring two runs in the fourth and three more in the top of the sixth inning. Samford then chipped away with two in the sixth, one in the eighth and the three-run bomb in the ninth.
 
Samford and Indiana will conclude play in this weekend's three-game series Sunday at noon (CT) as the teams play in the rubber game to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
