BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Big plays on both sides of the ball highlighted Samford's first spring scrimmage held Friday morning at Seibert Stadium.
"I thought both sides of the ball performed well at times, and both sides didn't do so well at times," Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said. "When you're the head coach, if the offense looks good, you're mad at the defense, and vice versa. So, it's hard to really judge until you watch the film, but I've been really pleased with our effort and our want-to this spring and that's the most important thing right now."
Four quarterbacks played during the scrimmage. Returning starter
Devlin Hodges, along with backups
Liam Welch,
Jes Sutherland and
William D'Armond saw action in the scrimmage.
Hodges led a pair of scoring drives, one ending in a three-yard touchdown run by
K'rondis Larry, and the other with a nine-yard touchdown pass to
Chris Shelling. Sutherland tossed a pair of touchdown passes to
Yassar El-Amin, one from 15 yards out and one from five yards away. D'Armond threw an eight-yard TD pass to
Kevin Marion.
Defensively,
Coutrell Plair intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Anthony Preston had a caused fumble in the scrimmage.
Brett Granger had a pair of sacks, while
Ahmad Gooden and
Garrett Brasher had one sack each.
The scrimmage marked the 11
th workout, but the first scrimmage of Samford's spring. Hatcher said he likes the way the younger players on the team have progressed so far.
"It's been going really well," Hatcher said. "We have a lot of young players on our team, guys that haven't played very many snaps in a collegiate game. So, we've taken it a little slower with them with the installs and the learning that needs to take place this time of year. But, I feel like we're in a pretty good place for practice 11."
Hatcher said the Bulldogs need to develop some depth this spring and during fall camp.
"We need as much live work as we can possibly get with the little bit of depth we have," Hatcher said. "That's been our issue in the spring, just lack of depth, so we're trying to build that up some. We have three more days next week, and hopefully we can find some things out about our football team."
Samford will practice Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. and Wednesday at 4 p.m. The team will wrap up spring practice with another scrimmage Friday morning at 6 a.m. at Seibert Stadium.
