SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The fourth-seeded Samford women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded Chattanooga in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Friday morning.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 13-9 on the season, and the Bulldogs have now won five-straight matches. Chattanooga ends its season with a mark of 14-7. Samford advances to Saturday's semifinals where the Bulldogs will take on top-seeded Furman at 9 a.m. (CT) in Greenville, S.C.
 
Samford took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. At No. 1 doubles, Ellie Gerlach and Grace Jennings defeated Samantha Caswell and Rachele Gazzola, 6-4. On the No. 3 court, Savannah Wood and Arianna Beltrame earned a 7-6 (7-2) win over Mckenzie Barco and Caroline Hall.
 
In singles, Chattanooga earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Samford, however claimed wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 to secure the victory. The match on the No. 5 singles court was not finished.
 
The win was clinched on the No. 2 singles court where Wood defeated Delaney Edwards, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Jennings defeated Sydney Patton, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. On the No. 6 singles court, Annika Hepp defeated Barco, 6-4, 6-2.
