Baseball Falls To UNCG In SoCon First Round

GREENVILLE, S.C. –
The sixth-seeded Samford baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to the third-seeded UNCG Spartans in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Thursday morning at Fluor Field.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 31-25 on the season. The Bulldogs will now play Western Carolina in an elimination game Thursday at 3 p.m. (CT). UNCG advances to take on ETSU Friday morning.
 
Samford was led in the game by Aryton Schafer, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Anthony Mulrine hit a solo home run in a 1-for-3 performance. Troy Dixon also drove in a run for Samford.
 
Cody Shelton (5-3) took the loss on the mound for Samford. Shelton pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. Jared Brasher tossed the final 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
 
For UNCG, Tripp Shelton went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Ben Spitznagel had two hits and an RBI. Andrew Moritz and Caleb Webster collected two hits each. Zach Kuchmaner drove in two runs with a triple in a 1-for-3 performance. Bryce Hensley (7-7) earned the win for the Spartans, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
 
After Samford grabbed an early lead with a run in the top of the second inning, UNCG took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kuchmaner drove in two runs with a triple, and Michael Goss singled to drive in a run for a 3-1 Spartan lead.
 
After UNCG pushed its lead to 4-1 with a run in the fourth inning, Samford closed the gap to 4-2 when Dixon singled up the middle to drive in Kevin Williams, Jr., to bring Samford to within two runs.
 
UNCG extended its lead with a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh, making the score 6-2. Samford added one final run when Mulrine homered to left field in the top of the eighth inning, making the final score 6-3.
