GREENVILLE, S.C. – The sixth-seeded Samford baseball team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 16-6 loss in eight innings to seventh-seeded ETSU Saturday afternoon at Fluor Field.
With the loss, Samford ends its season with a record of 33-26. Samford has won at least 30 games in nine of its last 11 seasons. ETSU improves to 30-28, and the Bucs advance to take on Furman later Saturday evening.
In the loss, Samford was led by Troy Dixon, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Austin Edens, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. T.J. Dixon and Ayrton Schafer had two hits each. Jordan Fucci drove in two runs, going 1-for-5 with a triple.
Connor Radcliff (2-3) pitched a third of an inning, giving up two runs to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Radcliff was one of seven pitchers used in the game by Samford. Tanner Cunningham, Hamp Skinner, Jack Rude, Jake Greer, Erin Baldwin and Kyle Stuart also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs. The Samford defense committed four errors, allowing five unearned ETSU runs.
For ETSU, Chris Cook went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Aaron Maher also homered for the Bucs, going 1-for-5 with three RBI. Christian Bailey had three hits for ETSU, while Jammer Strickland and Ethan Rice had two hits each.
Logan Gentry (3-1) pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three runs on five hits to earn the win on the mound for the Bucs. Blake Smith, Griffin Krieg and Peyton Taylor also pitched for ETSU.
After ETSU took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning, Samford came back with two runs of its own to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. ETSU plated four more runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Samford answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-4, ETSU.
The Bucs took control of the game with five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push their lead to 10-4. After Samford cut the lead to 10-5 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, ETSU came back with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 13-5. The Bucs pushed their lead to 14-5 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Samford plated its final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 14-6. ETSU then added two final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 16-6.
