Soccer Looks To Bounce Back Sunday At Alabama

Live Stats

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team will face its second tough opponent in three days Sunday as the Bulldogs travel to Tuscaloosa for a key in-state showdown against the Alabama Crimson Tide to be held at the Alabama Soccer Complex.

Samford (0-1) opened its 2017 campaign Friday at Memphis and dropped a 3-0 decision held at the Mike A. Rose Soccer Complex.

Alabama (1-0) also kicked off play Friday and cruised to a 5-1 home victory against Jacksonville State.

Last season, the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide squared off at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium and Samford earned a 1-0 triumph in the matchup.

The victory proved to be the Bulldogs' ninth all-time win against a Southeastern Conference opponent and their second over Alabama. Samford used a brilliant second-half goal from senior forward Jermaine Seoposenwe to collect the 1-0 tally.

All-time, the Bulldogs own a 2-4 record against Alabama and last season's victory snapped a three-match losing streak to the Crimson Tide. Samford's prior win in the series occurred Aug. 28, 2009, 3-0, at the old Bulldog Field.

Samford's game-winning goal last season was scored by Seoposenwe in the 50th minute of action. On the decisive play, the Bulldogs' Abriella Argueta stole an errant Alabama pass and streaked down the right sideline for 30 yards. Once she drew a pair of Crimson Tide defenders, Argueta sent a high crossing pass over to the left side of the field to an awaiting Seoposenwe.

Seoposenwe, Samford's All-Southern Conference forward who competed in the 2016 Olympic Games with South Africa, gathered the pass, took a couple steps toward Alabama goalkeeper Kat Stratton and niftily chipped a right-footed shot over Stratton's head and high into the back of the net.

Last season, the Bulldogs finished 2016 with a 15-4-2 overall record, as well as an 8-1 mark in SoCon play. Samford won the SoCon Tournament and squared off against No. 10-ranked Florida State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Following Sunday's showdown at Alabama, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Thursday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs play host to the No. 4-ranked Florida State Seminoles in arguably the most-anticipated match to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
