BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team will conclude play in its early-season, three-match homestand Friday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs welcome the Alabama State Hornets to the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium for an unprecedented in-state contest.
Â
Samford (0-4) and
Alabama State (1-3) will be meeting on the pitch for the first time Friday. Admission is
FREE to every home Samford soccer match.
Â
The Bulldogs head into the contest having faced one of the nation's toughest schedules up to this point in the season. Samford's first four matches of the 2017 campaign have come against Memphis, 3-0, Alabama, 2-1, No. 4-ranked Florida State, 4-2, and Michigan State, 3-2.
Â
On Sunday, the Bulldogs outshot the Spartans, 20-9, and controlled the run of play throughout the contest, but dropped a heart-wrenching 3-2 decision in the high-profile nonconference showdown.
Â
Samford's senior forward
Jermaine Seoposenwe scored two goals in the match against Michigan State and was subsequently named the Southern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday for her effort.
Â
Seoposenwe, who competed in the 2016 Olympic Games for South Africa, scored 16 goals in 2016 and has three so far in 2017. Seoposenwe is also the SoCon's active leader in goals and scored the 28th and 29th goals of her career Sunday at home against the Spartans.
Â
Alabama State enters Friday's matchup riding the positive momentum of a 3-2 home victory against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. Inma Martinez scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in overtime to secure the win.
Â
The Hornets' first three matches of the 2017 season proved to be consecutive losses against Ole Miss, 8-0, Jacksonville State, 3-1, and Troy, 2-0.
Â
Ariela Lewis leads Alabama State in scoring this year with two goals.
Â
Following Friday's home match against Alabama State, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday at 5 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta, Georgia, for a key nonconference matchup against the Kennesaw State Owls.
