Multiple Bulldogs Shine At 2014 Auburn Invitational

Samford’s Jones, Hazouri and Dorsett post the three fastest times in school history in the mile

Samford's Lauren D'Alessio continued her dominant 2014 indoor season Saturday with a memorable time in the 1-mile run.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field team continued to dazzle fans in its 2014 indoor season Saturday as the Bulldogs notched a plethora of school records, personal-best times and top distances at the talent-laden Auburn Invitational held at the nationally-renown Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
Against some of the nation's best teams and Olympic-class talent, Samford registered a dozen top-10 performances as the Bulldogs clearly held their own in Saturday's competition.

Samford's record-breaking outing was highlighted by a trio of performances in the men's 1-mile run. In what would prove to be one of the school's single-best competitions of all-time, the Bulldogs' Adam Jones (4:08.29), Brandon Hazouri (4:09.23) and Layton Dorsett (4:09.91) all shattered Samford's previous 16-year-old record in the event of 4:12.90, which was tallied by Andy Bishop in 1998.
 
In Saturday's Auburn Indoor Invitational, the Bulldogs' Jones placed sixth in the event, while Hazouri and Dorsett finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
 
Senior All-Southern Conference performer Lauren D'Alessio continued her sizzling indoor season Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the women's 1-mile run. D'Alessio, Samford's talented native of Pelham posted a brilliant time of 4:50.97.
 
Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs' Nathan Hendershot registered a school record by running a personal-best time of 1:51.48 in the 800 meters. Hendershot placed third in the event and trailed only Middle Tennessee's Eliud Rutto (1:50.19) and LSU's Blair Henderson (1:50.82).

Samford received a pair of top-notch performances in the women's shot put Saturday as Aerial Horton and Katelyn Poole finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Horton turned in a lifetime best and indoor school record of 13.44 meters, while Poole finished in seventh place with a distance of 12.96 meters.
 
On the men's side, the Bulldogs' promising junior Sidney Jordan opened the day with a 16.95-meter toss in the weight throw, in what was his inaugural competition in the event. His throw tied the conference lead in the event as he garnered an eighth-place finish.
 
Additionally Saturday, Samford's Luke Weishaar earned a fifth-place finish in the men's 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:41.27, while Owen Wagoner also placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 4.90 meters.
 
The Bulldogs' Morgan Johnson and Nicole Charley both tallied ninth-place finishes at the 2014 Auburn Indoor Invitational. Johnson earned her top-10 finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.70 meters, while Charley placed ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.69 meters.
 
Saturday's 2014 Auburn Indoor Invitational, which proved to be one of the nation's top events of the calendar year, included competitors from Samford, Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Middle Tennessee State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Vanderbilt.
