BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory over the Belmont Bruins Friday evening at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
The Bulldogs got off to a fast start, sweeping the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. On the No. 1 doubles court Roos van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach defeated Drew Hawkins and Erin Allen, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool earned a 6-1 victory over Terra Sheldon and Maria Plaksina. On the No. 3 doubles court Arianna Beltrame and Grace Jennings defeated Sarah Brackin and Mical Johnson, 6-1.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to come away with the 6-1 win.
 
At No. 1 singles, Gerlach defeated Plaksina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. On the No. 3 singles court, Horsfall defeated Allen, 6-0, 6-2. Pool picked up the win at No. 4 singles, defeating Brackin, 6-0, 6-4.
 
On the No. 5 singles court, Jennings earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sheldon. At No. 6 singles, Beltrame defeated Nikki Christiansen, 6-1, 6-2.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 2-0 on the young season. Belmont falls to 0-3 with the loss.
 
Samford will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 4, when the Bulldogs play at Mississippi State. The match is set for a 12 p.m. start in Starkville, Miss.
