BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to cross-town rival UAB Wednesday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
"Give a lot of credit to UAB today," Samford head coach David Vest said. "They played hungrier and tougher than we did at times tonight. They have improved tremendously from last year, and they proved why today. They deserve to be commended for outplaying us in most areas."
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 3-2 on the young season. UAB improves to 3-4 with the win.
 
"For us, doing the little things will make or break our season," Vest said. "It starts with practice habits, moves into how well we execute under pressure in the doubles point, and finishes with how competitive we are going to make each and every singles match. We have a ways to go, but a tough February schedule will tell us a lot about who we are as a team."
 
UAB took the singles point, winning on courts No. 2 and No. 3. Samford earned the win on the No. 1 doubles court, with Roos van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach defeating Sonia Grzywocz and Marlene Hermann, 6-3.
 
In singles Samford's Elsa Pool defeated Dominika Hrabalova, 6-3, 6-3 on the No. 4 court. UAB, however, earned wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the 4-1 win. The singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6 were not finished.
 
Samford will return to action on Friday, Feb. 9, when the Bulldogs play at Middle Tennessee. The match is set for a 3 p.m. start from Murfreesboro, Tenn.
