SPRING PROSPECTUS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team will open spring practice Monday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
 
The Bulldogs will go through a workout in shorts and helmets Monday at 4:01 p.m. The first day in shells is scheduled for Friday, March 30, at 6:01 a.m. The spring will conclude with a workout on Friday, April 20 at 6:01 a.m. All practices are open to the public and media.
 
Samford returns 10 starters on offense and six starters on defense from the 2017 squad. 

The Bulldogs return the Southern Conference's Offensive Player of the Year (Devlin Hodges) and Defensive Player of the Year (Ahmad Gooden). Hodges, who earned the honor for a second-straight season, led the Southern Conference and ranked sixth in the nation in both passing yards per game (331.9) and total offense per game (344.8). Gooden tied for the team lead with 15.5 tackles for loss, and he led the squad with 5.5 sacks. He had 101 total tackles, the second-highest total on the team.
 
The 2018 season will be the fourth at Samford for head coach Chris Hatcher and his staff. Hatcher is 21-14 in three seasons at Samford. His 2017 squad finished 8-4 overall and 6-2 in Southern Conference play, and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I-FCS Playoffs. The Bulldogs have reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 25 years.
