BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— The Samford football team went through its second scrimmage of preseason practice Friday morning at Seibert Stadium.
The Bulldogs scrimmaged for about an hour Friday. Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said he liked some things he saw throughout the scrimmage.
"I thought we did some good things in all three phases," Hatcher said. "A scrimmage is more of a fun day for the guys, to get a chance to see some guys that we're not sure about, in live situations. We're trying to build some depth. The guys that have played a bunch of snaps for us only got a few reps today, because we need to find out who that next guy in line is."
Three quarterbacks saw action in the scrimmage, with two leading two scoring drives each.
Senior starting quarterback
Devlin Hodges led two scoring drives. The opening drive of the scrimmage ended in an eight-yard touchdown run by
Roland Adams. Two drives later, Hodges hit
Yassar El-Amin for a 15-yard touchdown. It was the first of two TD catches for El-Amin.
Backup quarterback
Liam Welch hit freshman
Torrence Pollard over the middle for a 70-yard touchdown strike. Welch also connected with El-Amin for a 20-yard score.
Defensively,
William Bryant came down with an interception.
Mike Kelly had two sacks, while
Joseph Mera,
Brett Granger and
Jeremy Garth had one sack each.
"
Yassar El-Amin has had a really good camp at receiver, and it looked like he had a really good day today," Hatcher said. "I've been really pleased with
Koi Freeman,
Nathan East and
Christian Matthew, a couple of guys who we're going to count on to play a lot of snaps for us on defense."
The Bulldogs have now been in preseason practice for three full weeks. Hatcher said he is pleased with the progress his team has made so far.
"All-in-all, I think it's been a good camp up to this point," Hatcher said. "We're not where we need to be, but we're not where we were when we started day one. It's kind of an exciting time, because I really think that the vibe of our team is at a really good place right now."
The Bulldogs will take Saturday and Sunday off, returning to the practice field Monday at 6:11 p.m.
