SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford track and field's
Karisa Nelson was named the Southern Conference's Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Month on Tuesday, it was officially announced by the league office. Nelson is the conference's Athlete of the Month in the sport for the second consecutive time.
It was another busy, but successful, month for Nelson.
On February 9
th, she traveled to the Armory in New York City to compete in the prestigious Millrose Games and ran the women's mile with other top runners from around the world.
At the conference championships in Lexington, Nelson set two SoCon Championship meet records in the same day. On Sunday of the meet, Nelson's first place finish and 4:38.23 time in the women's mile and a first place finish and 2:06.10 time in the women's 800-meter run both were meet records.
She was named a conference champion in both and named the Female Most Outstanding Performer on the Track for the meet.
Next up, Karisa will compete close to home in the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala. at the Birmingham Crossplex. She'll run in the preliminaries of the mile event Friday at 5:30 p.m. and should she advance to the finals, she'll run once again on Saturday at 4:20 p.m. to compete for her, and Samford's, second national championship.
