Blue Team Downs Red, 1-0, In Samford Soccer Scrimmage

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team held a scrimmage to wrap up its fall practice season Monday night at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium, with the Blue Team downing the Red Team, 1-0.

"I was super proud of the team," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "We're just thankful that we were able to do this, because we tried to do it two or three times. The kids did amazing, I'm super proud of them."

The Blue Team took the lead late in the first half when Alex Bice scored with a shot in front of an open goal in the 38th minute for a 1-0 Blue Team lead. The teams played through a scoreless second half to end with a 1-0 score.

"I'm incredibly proud of Alex," Yelton said. "She's a senior now and the growth that she's had over her time here has been great. She's gone from being a kid that her freshman year, didn't see the field much, to now being a kid who has a chance to really help us."

Starting goalkeeper Morgan McAslan was in goal for the Blue Team, while Alex Bicknell was the goalkeeper for the Red Team. McAslan had nine saves, while Bicknell registered six saves.

"I think the thing I appreciated the most tonight is we had a very competitive spirit," Yelton said. "Some people could have taken off and said, 'oh, it's just a friendly,' but I really enjoyed the competitive spirit they showed."

The Bulldogs will now be off until returning to prepare for the upcoming spring season. The spring season is scheduled to begin March 5 with a match at Chattanooga. The Bulldogs will host Western Carolina for the team's home opener March 12.

"I think the challenge for us now is that we have 10 weeks off before we can get back into it," Yelton said. "I'm excited, but I'm also realizing that that's a challenge for any squad to come back from."
