Reigning SoCon Champs Open Season Against UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's soccer team returns to the pitch for its first game of the season on Thursday, Feb. 18 to face cross-town rival UAB. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
 
The reigning SoCon Champions are looking to capture their seventh-straight regular-season conference title. They started out 2021 being picked first in the Southern Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, while having four players named to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team. The Bulldogs also produced an overall record of 13-4-5, 7-1-1 (CONF) last season, while the Blazers produced a record of 4-7-6, 2-5-3 (CONF).

SERIES HISTORY

BULLDOGS TO WATCH
  • Taylor Yount had a standout 2019 season, earning First Team All-Conference recognition and a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman Team. In 1,301 minutes last season, she played in all 22 games, including 19 starts, tied the SoCon in goals with 10, and ranked second in the league in points with 22.
  • Alyssa Frazier was also named First Team All-Conference and started all 22 games for the Bulldogs. Frazier had 34 shots with 21 being on goal, while scoring five goals and contributing nine assists for a combined 19 points.
  • Lexi Orman was another Samford player to be named to First Team All-Conference last season after starting all 22 games. She logged a career-high 1,702 minutes throughout last season and took 18 shots with six on frame, eventually netting one goal as a defender.
  • Morgan McAslan joined Frazier, Yount, and Orman on First Team All-Conference after a solid 2019 season between the posts. She started all 22 games, earning 94 saves and posting 12 shutouts, including eight solo shutouts. McAslan was also named the SoCon Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after earning complete shutouts in both the semifinals and finals.

UAB QUICK LOOKS:
  • UAB has competed in a total of five games so far in their 2020-21 season. They have captured two wins against Mercer and one against North Alabama, while dropping two games with losses against Georgia State and No. 22 Memphis.
  • The Blazers return goalkeeper, Eve Beyer, who was selected to the Conference USA All-Rookie Team last season. Beyer started in 11 matches for the UAB and posted five shutouts. She had a total of 51 saves and earned a .823 save percentage.
  • Midfielder Asha Zuniga played in 17 matches and had 13 starts for the Blazers in her freshman debut. She had three goals on 25 shots with 12 of them being on frame.
  • Audria Wood played in all 17 games on the back line for UAB, earning ALL-C-USA Third Team. Kassandra Daniel also contributed defensively, playing in all 17 games and making 10 starts for the Blazers.
