Baseball Opens SoCon Play With Doubleheader Sweep At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford baseball team opened Southern Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader at UNC Greensboro Saturday. The Bulldogs won the first game, 6-1, before taking the second game by a score of 12-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford plated three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 advantage. Garrett Howe scored the first run on an error. Kaden Dreier then singled to drive in Sonny DiChiara and Brooks Carlson to give Samford a three-run advantage.
  • The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the fourth inning. DiChiara singled to center field to drive in Max Pinto for the inning's first run. Towns King later reached on an infield single to drive in Howe to extend Samford's lead to 5-0.
  • UNCG plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 5-1.
  • In the top of the ninth inning, DiChiara scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Crockett for a 6-1 Samford lead.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Samuel Strickland (3-2) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on 10 hits to earn the win for Samford.
  • Austin Koehn (1-2) took the loss for the Spartans, tossing 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNCG took an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning.
  • Samford took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Crockett drove in the first three runs with a double to left-center field. Crockett and Tyler McManus both later scored on UNCG errors for a 5-3 Samford lead.
  • The Bulldogs plated two runs in the sixth inning to push their lead to 7-3. Max Pinto singled to drive in Will David for the first run of the inning. Taylor Garris later scored on a wild pitch for a four-run Bulldog lead.
  • In the seventh inning, McManus and David both drove in runs to make the score 9-3.
  • In the eighth inning, Kaden Dreier drove in two runs and David drove in another for a 12-3 Samford lead.
  • UNCG plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 12-5.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Jesse McCord (1-3) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs, just two earned, on five hits to earn the win for Samford.
  • Austin Parsley (2-1) tossed 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Spartans.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Ryan Crockett went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Kaden Dreier went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Pres Cavenaugh led UNCG, driving in two runs in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate.
